ESMARTCITY as a case study for climate change mitigation in UN Climate Change Conference COP25

The Region of Abruzzo, Lead Partner of ESMARTCITY project, co-organizes a side event in the framework of UN Climate Change Conference COP 25, on December 5, 2019 in Madrid, Spain. The event entitled “Sustainability, adaptation and resilience – The strategy of Abruzzo, Marche and Umbria regions” presents the interregional sustainable development strategy jointly implemented by the Italian regions of Abruzzo, Marche and Umbria so as to make their territories resilient. It furthermore, highlights the need to take into account each local territory specific needs so as to develop efficient and effective strategies and plans, through best experiences and case studies. The role of the regions is recognized as quite significant to this end.

ESMARTCITY represents one such case study especially with reference to its pilot testing activities associated with Energy Efficient Buildings and Smart Street Lighting, and contributing to climate change mitigation. ESMARTCITY project manager, Iris Flacco, Manager of Department of Energy Policy, Air Quality, National Environmental Information System and Mining Resources of the Territory of Abruzzo Region, details ESMARTCITY pilot testing in Pescara with reference to Smart Street Lighting, as well as the policy change necessary for enhancing the Smart City paradigm shift.

The UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 takes place on December 2-13, 2019 in Madrid, Spain under the Presidency of the Government of Chile. The conference is designed to take the next crucial steps in the UN climate change process, mainly associated with the full operationalization of the Paris Climate ChangeAgreement.
